Question

How to Close the Parent Window

Asked by: n_narayanan

I have written an ASP application. What happens is as soon as the user log in I am opening a New Window and I wanted to close the previous window (main window) default.asp, which is the Login screen.

The problem is in IE, if we try to close the parent window, it asks for the confirmation (Do you want to close the window, something like that)

I dont want the confirmation screen.

Then you'll have to re-write the C++ code that has gone in to making Internet Explorer and distribute your new browser around the world!

Or, you can't, it's a security measure that has been hard-coded into the browser, and there is nothing you'll ever be able to do to bypass this confirmation message.

But, you might be able to do something else. Why do you want to close the parent window?

by: n_narayananPosted on 2002-01-11 at 06:21:48ID: 6726587

AlfaNoMore,

Thanks for your input.

Why I wanted to close is, I am opening a New Window because I wanted to hide the Address Bar, ToolBar etc.. etc.. From my knowledge we can hide all these things only if we open a new window.

 If I am able to do it in my current Window itself, then should be fine.

Is there anyway?

rdirect but you can't close the main window..

by: AlfaNoMorePosted on 2002-01-11 at 06:31:29ID: 6726632

But you could have a little onFocus check within the main window, that sets focus on the new window, if it's open?

Is this something you're trying to do?

window.open(), window.close(), window.open(), window.close()...

You can't close a parent window without notification to the user, as everyone has been trying to tell you...

It's easy... people keep saying that there's no way to close parent windows without alerting the user... NOT TRUE!!!

There's a way... but, are 50 points enough for an answer like this?

let me know if you wanna know how =0)

by: mgfranzPosted on 2002-11-18 at 13:16:08ID: 7465818

OK ivanmata, how do you close a parent window without notification?

by: ivanmataPosted on 2002-11-18 at 14:27:28ID: 7466103

Ok I'm gonna trust in you n_narayanan... Hope you realize how worthable this answer is and increase the points...

mgfranz and of course n_narayanan here it is, it's quite simple... just think about this: if you force a parent window to become a child of any window you'll be able to close it without any alert!!! how could you do this?

in your pop-up window just type this code:

<script language="JavaScript">
op = window.opener;
op.opener = 'a';  //   or anything...
op.close();
</script>

mgfranz: hehehehehe gotcha!!!

n_narayanan: hope this is still useful =0)

cheers
