Question

ASP IIS configuration

Asked by: smichellew

I need help getting IIS/the web server configured to handle ASP pages.  I am trying to get data from a form to be sent to an access database.  The form is set up, directed to the database, but when I open the database, there is nothing there.  HELP before I kill my system administrator (commonly referred to as the village idiot).

Thanks for any and all help.  This is driving me over the edge.

Please respond if at all possible to wilcoxm@fcti.org and wilcoxedu@aol.com.  I will check back regurlarly looking for an answer.  I need this working by tomorrow!

Thanks.

Michelle

are you posting the form data to an asp page and then trying to insert it?

can you post the code inserting the data into the database?

by: smichellewPosted on 2003-04-10 at 13:28:27ID: 8309192

I have created a form, and I want people to be able to log in to the website, fill in the blanks, and click on the submit button.  If you want to go look at the page (keep in mind I haven't named all of the fields, etc.) to see it, please go to www.fcti.org/old web/sensurv.asp (yes, that's a space, but it will work).  The page is not linked from the site.  I have just been experimenting with it.  I have created the database, but the page just won't send the data there.

can you post the .asp page?

by: KiranmayeePosted on 2003-04-10 at 13:34:20ID: 8309260

This is the sample code to insert in to Access database from form...

    set name1 = request.form("nameValue1")
    set name2 = request.form("nameValue2")
    set name3 = request.form("nameValue3")

    set conn=Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
    conn.Provider="Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0"
    conn.Open "C:/---------/TEST.mdb"

    insertFirst = "Insert into TABLE1(col1,col2,col3) "&_
    " Values ('"&name1&"' ,'"&name2&"', '"&name3&"' ) "
    conn.Execute insertFirst

Try to use response.write statements in your code

by: polesiukPosted on 2003-04-10 at 13:39:08ID: 8309300

you shouldn't be using 'set name1 = ...'
it should just be 'name1 = request.form("nameValue1")

Yikes...You think I'm an actual html/code writer?  I have NO clue what all that meant.  I just followed directions in Front Page, form properties, it created the database, etc.  I wouldn't know where to begin doing all of that stuff.  Thanks for your patience with me.  I was mae web mistress against my will when I said I could upload and create links.

You can go to www.fcti.org/old web/sensurv.asp and see the page.  You can check the code there, or I can post the code here if that would help.

that's all just html code, the page posts to itself and I don't see any ASP code to handle the database insertion.

by: polesiukPosted on 2003-04-10 at 13:52:32ID: 8309419

What you need to do is have an ASP page that takes in the values from the form and then using code (like Kiranmayee's) inserts it into the database. Do you have anything like that? I'm not sure how FrontPage set this up to put it in the database (assuming it did at all) though it is posting somewhere as there is a result page.

by: smichellewPosted on 2003-04-10 at 13:52:35ID: 8309420

Believe it or not, I was able to see that when I scrolled through the code.  I realized I didn't see any direction for getting it to the database.  I will look for further instructions, unless you can tell me how to do that in Front Page.

You must be a saint!

When I am in Front Page and i go to Form Properties, send to database, add connection, general (web settings) It shows information and part of that is server version - No server in use.  What does that mean?  The website is on the server and it is operational....I'm really lost.

by: smichellewPosted on 2003-04-10 at 13:57:50ID: 8309472

In Front page, it will actually create the access database for you, and it tells you to look in the "results" file for the results of what is posted to the site.

ok, this fcti.org server has ASP support? meaning is it running IIS (internet information services) or some other server that supports ASP scripting? because you need to have an ASP capable server in order to add information into a database (wither ASP or PHP or some other scripting language)
again I've never used frontpage before so I can't be sure if it adds some capability for database stuff.

by: smichellewPosted on 2003-04-10 at 14:13:45ID: 8309582

The server is running iis 5.0  I was able to print out some things to show the adminsitrator where it shows that the form data was unable to be loaded into the database.  IMaybe he can make sense of why.

by: polesiukPosted on 2003-04-10 at 14:16:39ID: 8309608

Looking at the code I noticed that the actions are being taken care of by some sort of 'web-bot'

Do you know anything about how to configure it/how it is used? (I assume FrontPage uses it and you're using FrontPage Sever Extensions)

Did you have any error messages?

by: smichellewPosted on 2003-04-10 at 16:15:29ID: 8310342

I got some sort of messages, but I left them at work, so I can't provide them for you now, adn yes, FP did the work...I have no idea what was done.

by: polesiukPosted on 2003-04-10 at 17:24:06ID: 8310619

When you get back to work tomorrow post the error (s) and maybe I or someone else will be able to help.  I'm also not at work right now but I have FP here at home and maybe I'll find something of use, though I'm sure using FrontPage will be as cryptic for me as asp/html code is for you :)
