Question

How to create Alias using ASP into an Oracle Database??

Asked by: ShaymusBane

HOPEFULLY an easy question for someone...how would I create an alias in an ASP page to access an Oracle database?

Example:

Set objConn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
objConn.Open "dsn=OracleDSN;uid=user;pwd=password;"
Set objRs = objConn.Execute("SELECT desc_e AS English Description FROM descriptions")

The 'English Description' part is what I want aliased....more to make the table headers easier to read...

I've tried using double single quotes (' ') double quotes (") escape characters(/  \) and nothing seems to want to work :(  I've used the latest Oracle ODBC driver, as well as the Microsoft Oracle ODBC driver...neither one worked.

Any other suggestions??  Thanks in advance...

No go :(  Getting an error

Error Type:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80004005)
[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-00923: FROM keyword not found where expected

Whenever I try anything....that's what led me to try different Oracle drivers...same error occurred then too

Try this:

Set objConn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
objConn.Open "dsn=OracleDSN;uid=user;pwd=password;"
Set objRs = objConn.Execute("SELECT desc_e AS 'English Description' FROM descriptions")

This worked without error when I tested it in an ASP page.

Still wont work JohnW....that's why I posted the error message...connecting to an Oracle 8 database...is it possible that it's something about the Oracle database?

by: JohnWLeBlancPosted on 2003-05-23 at 08:51:20ID: 8572911

Well, the driver may be the issue (I can't look up the driver on the test box to match it.)

The immediate idea that comes to mind is to replace the space in your alias with an underscore, and then use

REPLACE(column_alias, "_", " ")

In your ASP code. Sometimes quick and dirty isn't as dirty as getting hung up. :)

I hope this is of help,

John

Couldn't get that working JohnW....found a different solution.  Seems that the problem was how I was writing my queries!  For some odd reason, must be the Oracle, or the driver, it wanted VERY specific syntax...got it all working now though...

What I ended up doing, was to make my aliases 'less descriptive'....for example, in place of 'English Description', I put in simply 'Description'....not nearly as elegant, but it worked
