The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Client Side File Detection and otehr issues

OK I think I am heading down the wrong path so I'll see what you guys think.

This is part of a Web Based Training project.  I want the users to have the option of running the media files locally.  If this option is selected I'll need a way to download the files to the clients PC and then detect if they are in fact there when it comes time to run them.  My "media" files are in various formats like this:

18.ppt
24.mpg
345.swf
etc...
There might be dozens of files for each course but each media file is uniquely named so I have no need to fuss with subdirectories on the client.

OK The question.

1)  I need to find a way to doanload all the files to a specific directory with one click. No winzip or other archiving. I need the user to be ableto click a link, click OK and then walk away.

2) I need a way to detect if a file is available on the users PC.

For #2 I was able to use the FileSystemObject client side but only for Special Folders (%Win% , %temp%, %sys%).  This method is sub-optimal because the user gets the warning about an unsafe activeX object. But its the best I have so far. And because I have only been able to read files in the special folders I was leaning towards using the temp directory for the download location of #1. (not the worst scenario they kinda would be temp files)

I have the nagging feeling that I am going off in all the wrong directions with needless complications.

If anyone can see an aeasier approach I would appriciate it.
