Question

In need of ASP Pages to extract data from SQL 2000

Asked by: lebo2000

I am in need of some ASP pages to be developed to extract data from a SQL 2000 database through my web page.  I'm not sure how ,much work is required to do this so I am really just asking a general question.  I do not know how to do this nor do I know where to start.  Can someone point me in the right direction.  Would I waste too much time trying to do this myself or is it pretty easy to pick up on?  Thanks in advance for your help.

Try this page:
http://www.w3schools.com/ado/default.asp

Basicly you would need to use ADO to access SQL databases.  That page would give you some ideas of how to.

Are you trying to view the data or simply give a user the ability to download the data into a particular format via a ASP page.

by: luke_davisPosted on 2003-07-15 at 10:48:20ID: 8927545

Three questions.

1) do you know VB or VBscript or any programming languages at all?
2) do you know HTML design?
3) Do you understand what Active Server Pages(ASP) do for you?

If you know 1 and two then I'd say it's easy to pickup on

If you don't know one or two, then you'd be wasting time, unless your intent is to learn ASP development.

by: lebo2000Posted on 2003-07-15 at 10:55:54ID: 8927595

Thanks for the quick responses.  I do not have a strong desire to learn ASP unless I have to.  I do not know VB script and I’m not strong on HTML either.  My current Web host coded the ASP pages for me, but since I am leaving them and going to move my web page to my ISP they will not give me the code.

I have customers access their carrier data through my web page via ASP.  They only pull their data based on a 4 letter carrier code.  I am only pulling data from 3 tables in one database and on my other web page I am pulling from 5 tables, but it’s basic shipment information.  I’m not doing anything exotic or doing calculations.

Ok that said, you might find someone here who could "help you" develop what you need.  Or, you might be better off finding someon to do the coding for you.  It doesn't sound like it would be that difficult; I'd suspect no more than 2- 4 hours of actual work assuming.

1) you can provide the DB information
2) the table structure
3) what you want to do...  Just display... save.... edit... what.  since you said extract, I assume just a report or two...

by: lebo2000Posted on 2003-07-15 at 13:06:15ID: 8928739

Luke....I have all of the DB info, fields, Tables and what to display.  I know it is not a lot of work since I have all of the info I just don't know the code!

by: luke_davisPosted on 2003-07-17 at 06:04:07ID: 8942167

Alright then.  Explain what information you want to display and from what tables and I'll work on the code.   (Don't post db username or db password.  I'll use bogus names, and youll need to substitute.

After writing this up I realized it might be too much work for you to even think about trying to do , but here it is anyway for you to take a look at.

Each carrier has a uniqure carrier code called 4ltrcode and a password to access the database.

On my webpage I have a login screen where the Carriers put in their carrierinfo.4ltrcode and their carrierinfo.password.  Once they have been authorized access, another page comes up where they can view a shipment by Shipment.GBL or Shipment.LName or you can press the Import or Export button to see all shipments in the pertaining category.  If you depress the Export or Import button a prompt is displayed for you to select the year.  Right now the default is 2003.

There are 2 seperate sections that people extract data out of my SQL tables.  There is an Export section and an Import section.

EXPORT

Export jobs are displayed under an Export button where Shipment.JobType = Origin and Shipment.4ltrcode = the 4ltrcode selected on the login screen.

There are 2 parts to each section, summary and detailed.

The summary section consists of the following fields:

Shipment.GBL                              GBL
Shipment.Lname                        Last Name
Shipment.LoadDate                        Loading Date
Shipment.OrCity and Shipment.OrState         Origin Location
Shipment.DepDateWhse                  Departure Date
Shipment.DnCountry                  Destination
Shipment.RDD                        RDD

If a carrier wants to see the details on one of the shipments that is displayed, then they just click on the GBL field which then takes them to the details of the shipment.

The detail section consists of the following fields:

Shipment.GBL                              GBL
Shipment.LName                        Last Name
Shipment.FName                        First Name
Shipment.HPhone                        Home Phone
Shipment.WPhone                        Work Phone
Shipment.SIT_DateIn                  SIT Date In
Shipment.SIT_DateOut                  SIT Date Out
Shipment.CodeofSVC                  Code of Service
Shipment.Weight                        Weight
Shipment.LoadDate                        Load Date
Shipment.#ofPieces                        # of Pieces
Shipment.OrAddress                  Origin Address
Shipment.OrCity                        Origin City
Shipment.OrState                        State
Shipment.OrZip                        Zip
Shipment.ORCountry                  Origin Country
Shipment.DnAddress                  Destination Address

Shipment.DnState                        State
Shipment.DnZip                        Zip
Shipment.DnBase                        Destination Base
Shipment.DepDateWhse                  Departure Date at Warehouse
Shipment.TruckingCo                  Trucking Company
Shipment.RDD                        R.D.D.
Shipment.DeliveryDate                  Delivery Date
Shipment.SIT#                        SIT #

Weight Ticket

Warehouse.Cube                        Cube
Warehouse.Gross                        Gross
Warehouse.Tare                        Tare
Warehouse.Net                        Net

Density - this is a calculated field  (Shipment.Weight/Total Warehouse.Cube)           Density

IMPORT

Import jobs are displayed under an Import button where Shipment.JobType = Delivery and Shipment.4ltrcode = the 4ltrcode selected on the login screen.

There are 2 parts to each section, summary and detailed.

The summary section consists of the following fields:

Shipment.GBL                        GBL
Shipment.Lname                        Last Name
Shipment.ORCountry                  Origin Country
Shipment.ArrDateWhse                  Arrival Date
Shipment.RDD                        R.D.D.
Shipment.DeliveryDate                  Delivery Date
Shipment.SIT#                        SIT #

If a carrier wants to see the details on one of the shipments that is displayed, then they just click on the GBL field which then takes them to the details of the shipment.

The detail section consists of the following fields which is exactly the same as the Export section:

Shipment.GBL                        GBL
Shipment.LName                        Last Name
Shipment.FName                        First Name

Shipment.LoadDate                        Load Date
Shipment.#ofPieces                        # of Pieces
Shipment.OrAddress                  Origin Address
Shipment.OrCity                        Origin City
Shipment.OrState                        State

Shipment.DnCity                        Destination City
Shipment.DnState                        State
Shipment.DnZip                        Zip
Shipment.DnBase                        Destination Base
Shipment.DepDateWhse                  Departure Date at Warehouse
Shipment.TruckingCo                  Trucking Company
Shipment.RDD                        R.D.D.
Shipment.DeliveryDate                  Delivery Date
Shipment.SIT#                        SIT #

Weight Ticket

Warehouse.Cube                        Cube

Whoa.... Ok, it's not a simple reporting mechanism.  As you stated
"After writing this up I realized it might be too much work for you to even think about trying to do "

Its not that I don't want to help, its that people get paid for this kind of thing.  This is a little above and beyond typicall help offered by people here.  I'd estimate that this would take me about 8-12 hours to rough out and another 2-4 hours to finalize (excluding all graphics and layout junk)

So, if I were you, I'd look at finding a web development company near you that can do this for you.  I'd go that route for a few reasons.

1) Faster app dev time (than what you could do)
2) More robust code (they say they can do it, hold them to it)
3) What you've roughed out will be EXACLTY what they want as requirements.  Make certain you've covered EVERYTHING you want.  Client side validation on dates, security using (or not) SSL.  And much more.  Make sure that you don't get burned again. (eg. you get to KEEP the code regardless of where its hosted)  The company I work for by policy does not Own the code, we are just developers who we work for is the group that owns the resulting code)
4) It promotes you in your community.
5) Now, you might be able to find someone who will do it for low cost, but think about support. etc.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance but I can't imagine spending 8+ hours on one question.

Luke_davis is right, usually alll of these questions are answered off the tops of your head. If you need to out source this I would recommend you do a search on the net. I found a website called www.Gonzalezconsulting.com

Thanks Luke!  I didn't realize the extent of it until I really started mapping it out.  I couldn't ask you or anyone else to code all that without compensation.  I appreciate the help offered an you really have pointed me in the right direction.  Thanks again!

Glad I could help; unfortunatly sometimes the answer is that you need to <heh> seek professional help.
(no I don't mean mentally)

It sometimes turns out that the best approach costs some real $'s to fix, but in the end, your better off spending them.
