Question

Passing values between pages

Asked by: AveryH

I have an application in which I use 2 forms.  The first collects some preliminary data from the user such as who they are, their email address etc. The second collects some more detailed information and then saves it to a database.

I have 3 asp files to implement this: form1.asp, form2.asp, processforms.asp

In the form2.asp, I use code such as:

var1 = request("form1Field1")
var2 = request("form1Field2")

etc to retrieve the values input on the form in form1.asp.

I use similar code in processforms.asp to retrieve the values from the fields on the form in form2.asp:

var1a = request("form2Field1")
var2a = request("form2Field2")

The problem I am having is that I cannot work out how to pass the values obtained from form1.asp through to processforms.asp.

I have tried passing the values obtained in form2.asp to processforms.asp in the post/action method, eg

action=processforms.asp?var1?var2
action=processforms.asp?"Name = " & var1 ? "Email = " & var2

but all to no avail.

I hard coded values into process forms.asp to ensure that everything else (eg writing values to database) was working.

I am pretty new to ASP and really appreciate anyhelp anyone can give.

If you use Method-Post in your Form
use Request.Form("form2Field1")
If you use Method-Get in your Form
use Request.QueryString("form2Field1")

You can try this

<form action="processforms.asp" method="post">
...your additional form fields here

<input type="hidden" name="form2Field1" value="<%=var1%>">
<input type="hidden" name="form2Field2" value="<%=var2%>">
...
...
</form>

Add the following codes to your form in form2.asp
  <input type="hidden" name="form1Field1" value = request("form1Field1")>
  <input type="hidden" name="form1Field2" value = request("form1Field2")>

This will pass on the values from form1.asp to processforms.asp by using the hidden field.  Then you can just access the fields in processforms.asp as you would do in form2.asp.

Hi AveryH,
[You original code]
action=processforms.asp?var1?var2
action=processforms.asp?"Name = " & var1 ? "Email = " & var2
not a valid ASP statement.
Change to this :
<%
 var1 = request("form2Field1")
 var2 = request("form2Field2")
%>
<form name="frm" Method="Get" action="processforms.asp?Name ="+ <%=var1%> +"&Email=" & <%=var2%>>

You can try using Session Variables
example
Session("Var1") = request("form2Feild1")
Session variables are like global variables so you can still see it even you jump 3 pages ahead...

Try storing the values in a hidden field when  you are aready in form2.asp then use submit the form of form.asp to  processforms.asp...that should work.

Why not use Session Variables between the forms that way you can also keep the values in the form fields if any data is entered incorrectly!

Form1.asp -> Form2.asp
----------------------------------
Session("form1Field1") = request("form1Field1")
Session("form1Field2") = request("form1Field2")

Then on form2.asp just set the form values to the required session vaiable like so...

<input type=""text" name="form1Field1" value="<%=Session("form1Field1")%>"

You can follow this procedure through to your final page and all will be intact without any loss of data!

Many thanks Simon

By the way if you didn't know, Session Variables keep their value until you close the browser window or say a user logs out.

Points to SimonWGoldsmith for not only suggesting Iuse session variables but also for telling me how to define and then access them.

My thanks to everyone else for their suggestions.
