Question

INSERT INTO CREATES ERROR creates syntax error - 600 points (500 Dreamwaver + 100 here) same question

Asked by: wdeley

i've posted this also in the Dreamweave category, though I think this is more of an ASP expert question.  answer it there and here and you'll get 600 p's. I'll accept the answer and ask you to put an answer here (or vice versa) so there isn't too much duplication of your efforts..

Question Title: INSERT INTO CREATES ERROR
Author: wdeley
Points: 500
Date: 02/15/2004 10:17PM PST

i'm trying to insert the current date (server date), MemberID and AdvertiserName into the database but I'm getting the following error:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e14'

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Line 1: Incorrect syntax near 'Accessline Communications Corp.'.

/mar03test/ClickTracker.asp, line 42

Here is what is around line 42 in the code

<%
var rs2__myID = "2100000";
var rs2__myAdv = "Buy.com"
if (String(Session("custID")) != "undefined" &&
    String(Session("custID")) != "" && String(Session("custID")) != "NotLoggedIN") {
  rs2__myID = String(Session("custID"));
  rs2__myAdv = String(Session("Advertiser"));
}
%>
<%
var rs2 = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset");
rs2.ActiveConnection = MM_gotmango_STRING;
rs2.Source = "INSERT INTO dbo.ClickTracker (ClickDate, MemberID, AdvertiserName) VALUES (GETDATE (),   '"+   rs2__myID.replace(/'/g, "''") + "',  '"+ rs2__myAdv.replace(/'/g, "''") + "'";
rs2.CursorType = 0;
rs2.CursorLocation = 2;
rs2.LockType = 1;
rs2.Open();
var rs2_numRows = 0;
%>

I think it is related to unallowed characters that are included in the Advertiser name but not sure unless the Session variable Advertiser has such characters

try

rs2.Source = "INSERT INTO dbo.ClickTracker (ClickDate, MemberID, AdvertiserName) VALUES (Now(), '" + rs2__myID.replace("'", "''") + "',  '" + rs2__myAdv.replace("'", "''") + "')";

by: pillbug22Posted on 2004-02-16 at 08:41:15ID: 10373345

I think you need to add a closing ")"

rs2.Source = "INSERT INTO dbo.ClickTracker (ClickDate, MemberID, AdvertiserName) VALUES (GETDATE (),   '"+   rs2__myID.replace(/'/g, "''") + "',  '"+ rs2__myAdv.replace(/'/g, "''") + "')";

Hongjun is right, the Now() bit is not important, you are missing a closing bracket at the end before the lasr double quote.

by: hongjunPosted on 2004-02-16 at 08:43:16ID: 10373372

or this

rs2.Source = "INSERT INTO dbo.ClickTracker (ClickDate, MemberID, AdvertiserName) VALUES (Now(),   '"+   rs2__myID.replace(/'/g, "''") + "',  '"+ rs2__myAdv.replace(/'/g, "''") + "')";

nice work people.  i think i messed up how the "assisted answer" versus "accepted answer" works but tried to allocate points.

Pillsbug, you also deserve credit (and Peter58) for explaining the answer. Pillbug22, if you want to share in the allocation of the 500 pts.  I'll wait about an hour for you to post your name and aswer so you can get your credit.  Hongjun will be listed as the accepted answer there.

?

Right now, the points are split between myself, hongjun, and peter58.  That is the way you want it, correct?
