The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Autofill web form from database based on drop-down box selection

Asked by Heathicus in Active Server Pages (ASP)

I have a web form set up for colleges who work with us to modify their information on file with us.  It is basic information such as phone and fax numbers, mailing address, etc.  There are only 10 records so far and I don't expect that number to grow much at all.  The first box in the form is a drop-down box (which is a database lookup) listing the names of the participating colleges.  The user can select their college, type in their information, and upon submitting the form it updates their record.

This works OK, but I want to add to it and fix a flaw in the design.  If they leave one of the spots blank, then it replaces the current info with a null entry.  To fix that, and to make it easier to modify or change information, when one of the colleges is selected from the drop-down box, I want all of the other fields to be automatically filled in with their current information on file.  How do I do this?

I'm using FrontPage as my development tool, but the only instance of a FP "database results wizard" thingy is the drop-down lookup box.  I can recode that if necessary, however.  The form is posted to an ASP page that creates the SQL code to UPDATE the record in the database (and can also send an email confirmation).  The database is a Microsoft Access database.  I'll move to SQL Server eventually.
