assigning value from select/combo box to a variable in asp

I have a select component or combo box that I need to populate dynamically based on the selected item from another select component. I need to find a way to get the selected option from the first select and query a database based on the selection. I know how to query the database I just don't know how to assign the original selection to an asp variable or how to otherwise use the selection without first submitting the form, is there anyway to do this? Thanks for any help you can provide.
