I have a drop-down list which causes a post-back and loads data that can take some time. How can I create a loading message while that is happening? I've know how the very common Javascript loading messages work, but that requires posting back to second page which then loads a third page but waits to display it until the loading it complete. Is there an nice clean ASP.NET way (i.e. since ASP.NET applications post back to themselves, yes, I know you can change it, but it is much nicer to encapsulate the functionality in a single page) to accomplish this?
I don't know a ton about mixing Javascript and ASP.NET, but I was thinking maybe on drop-down change event it would fire client-side Javascript which shows a SPAN or DIV that said loading and then posted back and after the post back was complete, it would hide the SPAN/DIV. However, maybe there is a much better way?

im not extremely familiar with the crossplatform javascripts, but you would just need to write this in the <head> section of the html document.

that may actually work across platforms/browsers, but just check to make sure because, again, im not that expert with javascript.
this would go at the beginning of the page, so it would show for anytime that page is loaded. if the loading doesnt take long at all, it wont show. when your dropdown box does the post, your page will reload with the posted data. it will post the loading text and then after the processing is done, it will write the javascript and write the rest of the data that youve processed.

this will write to the page, then flush it to the client. when your processing is done, you would need to redirect or transfer the page to get rid of the "Loading..." part at the top. you could also put whatever html formatting in to center or drop the text down a little.
