help with asp process page.

I have to make a few web pages that will allow a user
to enter data that will be inserted into a sql server 2000 database.

The first asp page serves two functions:

1) to log in to our website (using email address & password)
2) to register to our website (if not already a member)

question:
If the person trying to login is already a member, how can I verify
if the email address entered is already in the database, and that
is also in the right format (@)(.)?
and if succeed then,
how can the next page have its fields filled with information
corresponding to this member, such as their email address,
password (******), and other settings.
otherwise these fields will be empty.

I apologize if this questions is too long, or too simple.
I am really not an expert on this subject. But I want to
learn.
