How are you outputting the value ? What should the full text say ? Have you checked that the description is complete in the database, and hasn't been trimmed down when it was entered ?

by: webber4Posted on 2006-09-26 at 11:47:41ID: 17604255

Im out putting the value like this: "&top5.fields("features")&"

it should say (straight from the database, hasnt been trimmed):
Hail Caesar! The best selling city builder series returns. Caesar IV takes the ancient city builder to the next generation with leading edge graphics and expanded control over the Roman Empire. Developed by the award winning creators of Caesar III and Pharaoh, Caesar IV is sure to please the masses.

by: carl_tawnPosted on 2006-09-26 at 11:57:49ID: 17604369

Theres no obvious reason why it shouldn't work.

I would suggest taking the text out of the database, pasting it into notepad or something similar and then pasting it back into the database. This is purely to see if there is maybe a rogue character in the field that is preventing the full text from displaying.

thats what i initially thought, but it isnt that, but it seems to be stuck at the 255th character mark

How have you opened your recordset and what provider are you using (ODBC or OLEDB) ?

by: webber4Posted on 2006-09-26 at 12:07:58ID: 17604486

Set Top5=Server.CreateObject("ADODB.recordset")
Top5Games="SELECT TOP 5 Sum(cust_orders.qty) AS SumOfQuantity,product_info.prodcode,product_info.description,product_info.sellinc,product_info.features,product_info.releasedate "
Top5Games=Top5Games&"FROM product_info INNER JOIN cust_orders ON product_info.prodcode=cust_orders.partcode "
Top5Games=Top5Games&"WHERE Len(esrb)<>0 AND (cust_orders.dateordered Between #"&month2&"# And #"&month1&"#) "
Top5Games=Top5Games&"GROUP BY product_info.prodcode,product_info.description,product_info.sellinc,product_info.features,product_info.releasedate "
Top5Games=Top5Games&"ORDER BY Sum(cust_orders.qty) DESC"

do you think i could factor in a SELECT First into my query?

by: carl_tawnPosted on 2006-09-26 at 12:30:48ID: 17604720

I'm having a playaround at the moment. I'm not sure that you need "Sum(cust_orders.qty) AS SumOfQuantity" in the SELECT. Are you actually using that value in your display or is it purely there for filtering the records ?

Couple of other things to try that have worked with older MDAC versions and access queries, not tried it on recent versions (in the last 2 years). They may sound odd, but each one changes the way things run in the connection.

Make the memo field the last entry in the select statement
Try changing the open mode to   Top5.open Top5Games,oConn,3,3
Try defining the select as a query and then selecting * from the query

The first option has worked for me more often than not in older mdac/access sites.

As Carl said, it would help if we knew what the display would look like as there may be a better way to factor the quiery(ies)

oConn,3,3 does nothing to the outcome
how do you mean by the 2nd suggestion?

What my query does currently is...
-forms a list of popular, chosen products,
-then shows the most popular at the top with selected information
-then shows the rest with limited info

by: SimonBlakePosted on 2006-10-31 at 01:30:45ID: 17840643

Thanks, which one(s) are memo fields? or doesn't it make a difference for you?

by: webber4Posted on 2006-10-31 at 08:16:41ID: 17843071

the memo feild is features

by: SimonBlakePosted on 2006-11-28 at 01:23:49ID: 18026341

Hi, sorry, I've not been able to re-produce the problem, when querying values from a memo field over 256 chars, it works on my setup without any problem so I don't know how I can help any further.

The only recommendation I have left is to try updating to the latest MDAC, or seeing if you can switch to MSDE/SQL Server.

Recommend pts refund.
