Question

Display information based on a date range

Asked by: shattered_rib

I’m trying to put together something that displays a quote based on a date range.  Here are the restrictions:

•      Quotes are updated on Tuesdays and Fridays.
•      The quote from Tuesdays are displayed until Friday.
•      The Friday quotes are displayed until the next Tuesday.
•      Quotes don’t repeat and I can’t put them into a database.

Here’s what I have so far…

quoteDate = Right("0" & Month(Date), 2) & "/" & Right("0" & Day(Date), 2)

If UCase(quoteActive) = "Y" Then

      'response.write(quoteDate)

      If quoteDate >= "05/01" And quoteDate <= "05/03" Then
            Response.Write("Quote")
      ElseIf quoteDate >= "05/04" And quoteDate <= "05/07" Then
            Response.Write("Quote2")
      ElseIf quoteDate >= "05/08" And quoteDate <= "05/10" Then
            Response.Write("Quote3")
      ElseIf quoteDate >= "05/11" And quoteDate <= "05/14" Then
            Response.Write("Quote4")
      ElseIf quoteDate >= "05/15" And quoteDate <= "05/17" Then
            Response.Write("Quote5")
      Else
            'Do Nothing
      End If

End If

Is there an easier or more efficient way of doing this?

Thanks,
s_r

if you cant put the data into a database, then thats about as good as you are gonna get.

I agree.  Besides not being able to use a database, the other issue, and I think bigger, is not repeating quotes.  That means modifying this or some other file anyways.  You might simplify the modification by putting the quotes and dates in an array but that is about it.  If I misunderstood about either of these options then let me know because it certainly doesn't seem to be a good use of server script.  It wouldn't be fun to have to change it regularly.  :)

i agree with that.  the other thing that popped in my head earlier was to write these quotes to a flat file and use fso to read them, but that will just increase processing and time.

s_r, can you explain to us the reason for that restriction?  we might be able to help you work around/with it.

b0lsc0tt and WMIF,
Because you both took the time to look over my question and comment, I will split the points between you both.

Just to share, here is the solution I'll be using. There are business restrictions preventing me from using a database. but I wanted to automate the script so that I wouldn't have to manually update the page every Tuesday and Friday. At least this way I don't need to worry about it until next year.

Regards,
s_r

I'm glad I could help and appreciate the split but I'm puzzled by the grade.  It seems like the grade was a B.  However the solution you ended up using, the "easier way" you "figured out" seems to use arrays, which was an idea I suggested as a change to make it a little easier to modify.  It would seem like that deserved more than a B, especially since either one of us would have provided details or help if you asked.

I am definitely glad you got it working a little better and do appreciate the reply and info.  I was just a little puzzled by the grade.

Thanks for the fun question.

I actually got my answer from outside Experts Exchange but wanted to thank you both for at least taking the time to view my question by awarding points rather than closing the question. I reviewed the grading policy and thought a 'B' was appropriate. I re-evaluated the guidelines and realized that coding samples would have been supplied if asked resulting in an 'A' grade. Originally, I was looking for examples but I see now that my intent and request was unclear.

My apologies, I placed a request to have the grade changed.

Best regards,
s_r

Thanks for the reply and for the extra time to re-evaluate and have the grade change made.  Although the most important thing to me was your question being solved I do appreciate the A and especially the extra time involved in this case.  It is nice to have a chance to earn the A and I'm glad you recognized that we would've done what was needed to help.

Thanks again for the reply and change.  See you around and good luck with the project. :)
