how to download a file using ASp

I want to create a asp page which will check a database and accordingly it will download a file on the client pc with showing any dialog box to the user.

I have written code to check the database.
but how can i download a file silently on the client pc, without showing him any dialogbox using asp

Why would you need to do this? All browsers will show a dialog before tansferring any files to the users computer.

I guess it is not possible, without the showing the dialog box you cannot download the file on the client's pc.

The only way you could possibly do i is through an active x control that is already installed on the clients machine. But thats quite complicated and maybe costly.
