The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Recommend the use of the Dictionary object?
Tags: ASP VBscript
newbie needs help here. I'm thinking of using the dictionary object in my ASP Classic/VBscript web-site since it has a bunch of nice abilities. However can someone tell me if it uses cookies and if it's an activeX application? In other words, does using it increase the chances that someone's browser will not work because they have those turned off, or require permission to let them run? If so, I'll only use it if absolutely necessary.  If it's safe I'd just as soon use it whenever it's the easiest way to go.  Tried to find the answer to this and didn't see it discussed, but if it is please point me to the thread.
Thanks, Ron

The Dictionary object is a Server object and not a client object. It is only valid on the IIS server (ASP). There are no cookies or javascript involved. There is no client (Browser) involved

excellent. I assume you're saying there's no particular downside to using it whenever it the easiest method?

If you need a collection like the Dictionary object, then I say, "Use it, and damn the torpedoes!"

full-speed-ahead it is! Probably could have saved myself a ton of time over the last few days.  Thanks for the help.

rodell20,

Badotz has answered this and all credit to him for it.  Just a little extra info (please no points).  Another handy thing if an array and dictionary object aren't quite enough is to create a recordset.  The same recordset you may use when getting results from a database can be manually made and used to extend what a dictionary or array could do.  Add fields, sort, etc.  Like the dictionary object it is all done on the server.

Let me know if you have any questions or need more information.

Thanks b0lsc0tt.  I'm using Access as the db on my site, you mean create a temp table and then delete when done, or something else?  Can you think of a common scenario where a recordset is handier than a dictionary?

Not create a table on the database but actually a recordset object.  One common example of this from my experience is working with files and the FileSystemObject.  For example I want to sort the files by name or date.  An array and dictionary object won't let me easily keep track of name, size, date for each file.  It also won't let me sort that info on one of those fields.  I create a recordset object, make fields for each item, and then fill the recordset with each file and its info.  Then I can sort the recordset and loop through the results.  An example of this is at http:Q_23123516.html .

If you want more info or need help using this then feel free to open a new question for it.  If you do open a new question and want to attract my attention to it then you can post the URL here to let us know about it.

I hope that helps explain it. :)

bol

p.s.  Remember this does not have anything to do with your Access table or any other database.  It is just an object on the server which you made and can use this way.

lrygiel,

I am sorry!!!!  I completely misread the posts and thought both were from Badotz.  It was probably the quote that threw me off. ;)  Thanks for correcting my mistake.  Your comment (http:#21536795) was what I was referring to in my first comment (http:#21537035).  I am sorry I confused the experts.  Good catch!  All credit to you for this answer.
