Question

How do I use TOP to query the latest 4 dates a patient had a visit as long as the dates were during the current month?

Asked by: gr33d

I have a SQL statement to pull all active patients' visits from a current month, but I only want the 4 most recent dates. I think TOP is the solution to my problem, but I'm not sure how to use it

Code below and tblPatients and tblVisits attached. Note Patients 2 and 5 have 5 visits in October 2008. The query should only return the 4 most recent.

Note: this file has URL parameter ?unit=3

Thanks in advance!

ERRATA:
the recordset must include even those patients who are active but have NOT yet had a visit this month

by: Rick_WrightPosted on 2008-10-10 at 06:15:08ID: 22686501

Yes TOP is the way to do it, but you have to have the recordset ordered correctly i.e.

strSQL = "SELECT TOP 4 tblPatients.ID, ...
... ORDER BY tblVisits.dateVisit DESC;"

Hope that helps
Rick

by: gr33dPosted on 2008-10-10 at 06:46:01ID: 22686836

Won't it be more than that? I need the statement to give me a recordset that may have null values in the 3 tblVisits fields where it finds active patients that have not yet had a visit this month. they will not be null if the patient has had visits this month, but hold at most 4 tblVisits records based on most recent visits.

make sense?

by: jitgangulyPosted on 2008-10-10 at 06:48:23ID: 22686860

You can do it without using TOP. TOP is a new keyword in SQL world. In early days, people used to sort on date and keep a counter, if it reaches 4 then come out of the loop

by: gr33dPosted on 2008-10-10 at 06:59:41ID: 22686962

but i have to get the 4 most recent visits from a ton of patients. how can i keep a counter for a dynamic number of patients? i figured sorting by lname, fname, dateVisit would put everything in the order I need it. Ideally, i want my table to look like:

name1 | <link to add visit because no visits this month>
name2 | visit 1 info | visit 2 info |
name3 | visit 1 info | visit 2 info | visit 3 info | visit 4 info |
name 4| <link to add visit because no visits this month>

by: jitgangulyPosted on 2008-10-10 at 07:01:57ID: 22686980

You basically need 2 loops. One for all teh patients and next for last 4 visits

How's your table structure. Should have one to many

by: gr33dPosted on 2008-10-10 at 07:24:54ID: 22687169

i didnt set up any relationships in Access.

are you referring to loops in SQL or loops in the ASP?

by: jitgangulyPosted on 2008-10-10 at 07:53:53ID: 22687393

Can I see your table structure ?

I was talking about loops in ASP. Though it van be done is SQL also. But since you are using Access, it will be little mroe complicated

Looks good.
Here is the pseudocode

1st query
ssql1=Select * from tblPatients

if not rs1.eof then
do while not rs1.eof
'Second query
ssql2="select * from tblVisits where id=" & rs1("id")
if not rs2.eof then
do while ctr <=4
'Here print details
rs2.movenext
loop
end if
rs1.movenext
loop
end if

i tried the following and received a (0x80020009) Exception occurred. line 32

line 32 is the second Response.Write() in the innermost nested loop

googling this error took me here:
http://classicasp.aspfaq.com/general/why-do-i-get-80020009-errors.html

the second entry here appears to be a possible problem--recordset out of scope maybe???
