Question

Automatically e-mail in classic ASP using query results from user defined fields

Asked by: LZ1

Hey Experts!!
I have an intranet based in classic ASP on an Access 2003 database.  What I wish to do is e-mail, given specific criteria that my users choose, a form stating that their product is expired.

Is there a program/tutorial/script that can achieve this or that someone has used in the past?  I have searched and found that most of the results/programs I come across require the user to know SQL. I would like to base this on classic ASP and integrate it with my intranet if possible.

There is a product for Dreamweaver that achieves this, but my client is hesitant on taking the plunge (even at the small fee it requires).  So can someone suggest something that either does this or does something like this in a tutorial or script fashion?

Here's the product I found: http://linecraft.com/asp_email_merge/index.php

Thanks in advance!

One important consideration is how your site is hosted. That will help us determine what mail code to use. For example, if you are on a Windows 2003 server, we can use CDO.sys to send the mail. If you are on an old Windows NT server, then you would have to use CDONTS. Finally, if you are using a hosting service, then you would have to use whatever mail component they happen to support.

Do you happen to know the answer to the above?

We are on a Windows 2003 SBS system.  I tackled CDO.sys prior, but things seemed to have gone haywire and I kind of shunned myself away from that.  What actually happend was I opened up the server to a relay attack.  BIG huge mess I wish to avoid from now until forever. :)

You will have to return to that, but put security in place that requires authentication for sending, receiving, or relaying messages.

I'm attaching a snippet for sending mail with security enabled.

Sub SendMailCDOSYS(strFrom,strTO,strSubject,strBCC,strHTMLBody,strTextBody,strAttachmentPath,arrAttachments)
On Error Resume Next
     Dim objCDOConf,objCDOSYS,i
     ' ** CREATE THE E-MAIL SERVER OBJECT **
     Set objCDOSYS = Server.CreateObject("CDO.Message")
     Set objCDOConf = Server.CreateObject ("CDO.Configuration")

     ' ** SET AND UPDATE FIELDS PROPERTIES **
     With objCDOConf
          ' ** OUT GOING SMTP SERVER **
          .Fields("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/smtpserver") = "YourMailServerHere"
          ' ** SMTP PORT **
          .Fields("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/smtpserverport")  = 25
          ' ** CDO PORT **
          .Fields("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/sendusing") = 2
          ' ** TIMEOUT **
          .Fields("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/smtpconnectiontimeout") = 60
					'Your UserID on the SMTP server
					.Fields("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/sendusername") = "YourUsername"
					'Your password on the SMTP server

What about simply exporting the recordset into an e-mail merge through Word?  Then it would automatically integrate with their Outlook/Exchange account?  That would be ideal, however, I'm not sure if that is entirely possible without crossing into .net.

I don't think that you would want to install Word on your server--that would be a very bad idea. If you want to take that approach, you are better off writing a VBScript and running it from one of your client machines.

I can't remember where I found this, but something along these lines (it runs from within access):

Sub OutlookTest()
    Dim Recipient As String
    Dim appOutLook As Outlook.Application
    Dim MailOutLook As Outlook.MailItem
    Set appOutLook = CreateObject("Outlook.Application")
    Set MailOutLook = appOutLook.CreateItem(olMailItem)

    Recipient = "Someone@somewhere"

    With MailOutLook
        .To = Recipient
        .Subject = """
        .Body = ""
        .Attachments.Add "PATH HERE", olByReference, 1, "Approval"
    '* Use olByValue to send actual file as attachment
        '.DeleteAfterSubmit = True   'This would let Outlook send th note without storing it in your sent bin
        .Send
    End With

DriverExit:
    On Error Resume Next
    Set MailOutLook = Nothing
    Set appOutLook = Nothing
    Exit Sub

End Sub

I do apologize for the tremendous delay in my response, but there were some personal things I had to take care of.

Anyhow, I need to allow my server to be able to send e-mail from an ASP web page.  Does anyone have a good tutorial on how to setup IIS?

I got it.  I actually used CDOSYS instead of CDONT's and purchased a Dreamweaver extension.

Thanks everyone!
