Question

Asked by: eaweb

hi i have the following html form:

<form id="view" name="view" method="post" action="view.asp?SEQ=154" target="myframe" >
  <input type="hidden" name="AN" value="124478"  />
  <input type="hidden" name="MDY" value="1/5/1878"  />
</form>

as seen the taget is myframe

now i am post to a viewurl using below code:

getView = "AN=124478&MDY=1/5/1878"
dim xmlhttpsf
set xmlhttpsf= server.Createobject("MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP")
xmlhttpsf.Open "POST",ViewUrl,false
xmlhttpsf.setRequestHeader "Content-Type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"
xmlhttpsf.send getView
viewDay = xmlhttpsf.responsetext

Set xmlhttpsf= nothing

my question is:
is it possible to post to a target like in a form with above xmlhttp request?

The target is used to display the response that server sends. With XMLHttp you have the response in viewDay variable. You can do whatever you want with it including displaying it in an iframe.

<iframe id="myframe" name="myframe" src="SomePage.html"></iframe>

function WriteToIFrame(iframeID, Content)
{
	var iframe = document.getElementById(iframeID);
	var doc = null;

	if (iframe.contentDocument)
	  doc = iframe.contentDocument;
	else if (iframe.contentWindow)
	  doc = iframe.contentWindow.document;
	else if (iframe.document)
	  doc = iframe.document;

	doc.open();
	doc.write(Content);
	doc.close();
}

WriteToIFrame("myframe", viewDay);

Show us the whole code. Also you need to understand that even though all the code may be within the single file, it is not executed whole on the server or the client. The code within the <% %> is executed on the server first and the result is sent to the client. Then on the client the HTML is rendered and javascript executed.

This can be done very simply by an auto post. Something like this

<html>
<head>
<script>
</script>
</head>
<body onload="document.forms['autoSubmitForm'].submit()">
    <form name="autoSubmitForm" method="post" action="http://www.mytest.com/process.asp" target="myframe">
        <input type="hidden" name="AN" value="124478">
        <input type="hidden" name="MDY" value="1/5/1878">
    </form>
    <iframe id="myframe" name="myframe" src="view.asp" scrolling="no" style="overflow:visible; width:100%;"></iframe>
</body>
</html>

yes but i am self submitting the page and base on what is submitted i post to process.asp and have the results displayed in myframe

by: amit_gPosted on 2009-10-06 at 09:10:19ID: 25506665

I am not sure if I understand. The above script should do that. Is this not what you want?

by: eawebPosted on 2009-10-06 at 09:21:59ID: 25506784

my issue is this:
when i self submit the page i check on a condition and based on the condition i display the form. lets say if i=1 thats why i can submit onload otherwise i get an javascript error as the form doesn't exist. that's why i want to auto submit the form in the background and load the data in the iframe as i can't submit onload.

by: amit_gPosted on 2009-10-06 at 09:29:14ID: 25506876

Would it work if the form is submitted only if the form is rendered i.e. when 1 = 1? If so,

<body onload="if (document.forms['autoSubmitForm']) document.forms['autoSubmitForm'].submit();">

by: eawebPosted on 2009-10-06 at 12:44:12ID: 25509031

hi
it doesn't submit onload. the form is getting created as i see in viewsource.

by: amit_gPosted on 2009-10-06 at 12:46:48ID: 25509056

Can you paste the view source here?

by: amit_gPosted on 2009-10-06 at 13:56:17ID: 25509875

The form's ID and name are within both double and single quotes. Use only one set and the name should be same as used in onload script i.e. fviewmonth. Change the form tag to

<form id="fviewmonth" name="fviewmonth" method="post" action="view.asp" onsubmit="getMonthView();" target="myframe" >

also there is not iframe. You need to have it if you want to have the target.

by: eawebPosted on 2009-10-06 at 14:04:15ID: 25509934

ok i changed as below, but no positive result

<body onload="if (document.forms['fviewmonth']) document.forms['fviewmonth'].submit();">

<form id="fviewmonth" name="fviewmonth" method="post" action="view.asp" onsubmit="getMonthView();" target="myframe" style="display:none" >
  <input type="hidden" name="accountNumber" value="13193002"  />
  <input type="hidden" name="accountMonthDay" value="11/28/2008"  />
</form>

maybe the onload is being executed without the form being created yet??

by: amit_gPosted on 2009-10-06 at 14:11:32ID: 25510005

No the onload is executed after the whole pgae is loaded. I just copied the HTML you have provided and the form was auto submitted. Do you have this online? It would make is so much easier to troubleshoot. There is nothing wrong in the HTML now except that you still don't have an iframe but that would not stop the form from being submitted. What is getMonthView()?

by: eawebPosted on 2009-10-12 at 06:52:26ID: 25551203

ok if i do the following
<form id="fviewmonth" name="fviewmonth" method="post" action="view.asp" onsubmit="getMonthView();" target="myframe" style="display:none" >
  <input type="hidden" name="accountNumber" value="13193002"  />
  <input type="hidden" name="accountMonthDay" value="11/28/2008"  />
</form>
fviewmonth.submit();

by: eawebPosted on 2009-10-12 at 06:55:53ID: 25551234

oh sorry didn't finish.

ok if i do the following the form will be submitted.
<form id="fviewmonth" name="fviewmonth" method="post" action="view.asp" onsubmit="getMonthView();" target="myframe" style="display:none" >
  <input type="hidden" name="accountNumber" value="13193002"  />
  <input type="hidden" name="accountMonthDay" value="11/28/2008"  />
</form>
<script
<script language="JavaScript" type="text/JavaScript">
      <!--
            document.fviewmonth.submit();
      -->
</script>
*********************************************************************

but again, isn't there a way to auto submit the form via asp xmlhttp to a frame??

by: amit_gPosted on 2009-10-12 at 07:39:34ID: 25551620

target="myframe"

should be submitting the form in the frame or iframe named as myframe. The ASP doesn't know about the frame so you can't return a result from asp to a frame without help of  browser.

by: eawebPosted on 2009-10-12 at 07:56:03ID: 25551758

but i tested your code
<script type="text/javascript" language="javascript">

      function WriteToIFrame(iframeID, Content)
      {
      var iframe = document.getElementById(iframeID);
      var doc = null;

      if (iframe.contentDocument)
      doc = iframe.contentDocument;
      else if (iframe.contentWindow)
      doc = iframe.contentWindow.document;
      else if (iframe.document)
      doc = iframe.document;

      doc.open();
      doc.write(Content);
      doc.close();
      }

      WriteToIFrame("myframe", <%=viewDay%>);
</script>

but wasn't able to make it. is there something else i need to do with above code?

by: amit_gPosted on 2009-10-12 at 09:50:08ID: 25552792

That code is not needed. When I posted that, I thought you are doing a AJAX request from client and want to put the result in an iframe. That is not the case with you. You are doing a post and want to see the result in an iframe. You xmlhttp is in the asp not on the client so, just using the target attribute of form post would be sufficient.
