Hello,
i have had to rebuild a site, its orignal page was of html. the new site is asp. Google has indexed the html page from the past thus I would like to add a 301 redirect from the html page to the asp page. what is the best 301 redirect should i use.

The old page was of htm type the new page is of asp
i have tried this
i created a page and saved it in notepad the pager was called .htaccess
this is the code inside that page
redirect 301
/index.htm

the problem is when i go to http://www.mysite.co.uk/in
As your page is a .htm unless you have access to the server as you can change some of the core settings you can't do a 301 redirect as the server will not process a HTM page - the server simply sends the page as is.
An alternative solution is to add the following line inside the <HEAD></HEAD> tags of your htm page, this will cause the users browser to perform the redirect and is supported by almost all browsers, requires no user interaction and does not trigger any warning messages.
<META HTTP-EQUIV=REFRESH CONTENT="1;URL=index.asp">
i am on a shared server and have been told in the past that the likes of
