Question

request.ServerVariables("SERVER_NAME") is returning a blank

Asked by: ms_smuc

I have to differentiate between users who access our web-based reporting tool from inside or outside the company network.

I am hoping that using request.ServerVariables("server_name") will help me do that by returning <servername> if someone accesses the site inside, and <servername>.xyz.com if it is accessed from outside. But no value is being returned by this line - request.ServerVariables("server_name"). Any help regarding this would be much appreciated. I am attaching the code for your reference.

Many thanks

Try the LOCAL_ADDR or REMOTE_ADDR variables.

tgerbert

If I replace server_name with local_addr, the page refuses to load.

Also, is there something wrong in the way I added the ASP code in between the <script> tags? (please note that lines 56-60 are part of the code and not commented out like they seem to be)

You can use <%=Request.ServerVariables("BLAH_BLAH")%> instead of the longer Response.Write(Request.etc.etc)).

Also, what's gonna happen is that the client will receives this:

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="VBScript">
<!--
Sub Window_Onload
...

'For now, just trying to print the server_name
            YourServersName
                   document.write("The report has failed to load.<br><br>")
      end if
...
End Sub

Notice that "YourServersName" now appears as a line in a VBScript code block, and "YourServersName" is not a valid piece of VBScript.

I tried the following
1.                  dim strServer
                  strServer = request.ServerVariables("server_name")
                  document.Write("server name is " & strServer & "<br>")

2.     document.write(<% =request.ServerVariables("server_name") %>)
3.     document.write(<% request.ServerVariables("server_name") %>)

Nothing worked.

Another thought. Is there some IIS setting involved here?

Try this complete ASP page:

<%@ Language=VBScript %>

<html>
<head>
<title>Test ASP Page</title>
<script language="javascript">
function window_onload()
{
  alert("The server's name is: <%=Request.ServerVariables("SERVER_NAME")%>");
  document.body.innerHTML += "The server's IP address is: <%=Request.ServerVariables("LOCAL_ADDR")%><br />";
}
</script>
</head>

<body onload="window_onload()">
Your IP address is: <% =Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_ADDR") %><br />
<hr>
</body>
</html>

Before the HTML is sent to the browser, IIS will process everything inside the <% %> blocks, so what Internet Explorer gets looks like this:

<html>
<head>
<title>Test ASP Page</title>
<script language="javascript">
function window_onload()
{
  alert("The server's name is: intranet");
  document.body.innerHTML += "The server's IP address is: 192.168.1.10<br />";
}
</script>
</head>

<body onload="window_onload()">
Your IP address is: 192.168.1.55<br />
<hr>
</body>
</html>

that asp page worked! Now how can I store this in a variable in my original asp page instead of displaying it?

If the users have to login, then you can add this to a form, so that when they login to the site, it gets entered into a database.
That would be the best way to acheive this.
The only other way, if the user is not having to login, is that you would need to have a page.
That send the information to the database with the on body load.

They are the only 2 things that I can think of to do with it.

Good Luck

carrzkiss..thanks for responding but that is not the kind of solution I was looking for.

I ended up sorting this loooking at tgerbert's solution more closely. It turns out all I had to do was use quotation marks.

strServer = "<% =request.ServerVariables("server_name")%>"

instead of

strServer = <% =request.ServerVariables("server_name")%>
