Question

Asked by: tmurray22

I need a selection method that is bigger then check boxes and radio buttons. This is really for
a smaller device that is touch screen(but is web app) and the check boxes and radio buttons are difficult to check. I have attched a sample of what I would like to do. Basically it is selecting a larger box with the selection and having it chnage color. Not sure if possible without java.

<img Tags have events just like any other element.
I don't know how the touch screen detects a touch. but OnClick works in the DOM for any browser.

try images as suggested by Banthor
use javascript to make those act as checkboxs and radio buttons.

have a hidden field for all the checkbox (images) when you click on a image; replace it with checked/unchecked image and update the hidden field

You could use the <label> tag. This will make a click on its content equal to a click on the checkbox / radio button.

See attached code:

<html>
<head>
</head>
<body>
<form name="myform">
<label for="test1"><img src="button.gif"></label>
<input type="checkbox" id="test1" name="test1" value="1">
<br />
<label for="test2"><img src="button.gif"></label>
<input type="checkbox" id="test2" name="test2" value="1">
<br />
</form>
</body>
</html>

Sybe using that code the checkboxes still appear. Also if I hide the check boxes and use the image how can I distinguish what has been selected . Wouldnt I need to replace with a different color image?

This is just for a demonstration and doesnt actually have to record results it just needs to appear visually as working.

Thanks

Make the checkboxes invisible with CSS:

<input type="checkbox" id="test1" name="test1" value="1" style="display:none;">

(if that works on the touch screen device, in a regular browser it works)

As for changing the color: it is solvable both client- and server-side. Client-side requires javascript, I am not sure if you want that. Server-side needs to remember the pushed buttons in a session or in form-variables (and requires a reload after every click).

I got it to work using this below. I will make a new post to change the color.

<div style="position: absolute; width: 100px; height: 52px; z-index: 1; left: 168px; top: 256px; background-color: #00FFFF" id="layer1">
