How can I set the width of the span tags?

How can I set the width of the span tags?

I would like to have two cells of content, one on the left and one on the right, each having a fixed width of 50% of the parent element.

I tried to set the width in the span tags but it didn't work. I only works from within the div tag.

The problem with my code is that the two cells appear one above the other (thanks to the div tags), instead of one beside the other.

Here is my code:
