Rowby Reloaded - Need left column added to tableless page

Tableless pages are certainly a learning experience for me.

I have decided to dump 99 percent of what I have already done here with your excellent help, and to go back to the original wordpress template and resetup this page. I decided to do this because during my modifications of the page I left out some essential code that is basic to wordpress. I decided I didn't want to go too far astray from the basic wordpress conventions on the basic code setup, because sooner or later I would need to get some support directly from the Wordpress community.

So here is where I am now. I need two things in this question.

1. I need to put in a left colum into this tabless site. I want it to be approximately the same width as the right column.

2. Regarding the right column (which is called sidebar) I need to add graphics and other items, etc. I notice that the left column is a menu built using ul's. At the moment the right menu is only text. How can I combine graphics in a ul menu? Graphics with an occasional link. For example, if I wanted to add an image called foobar.jpg for the rss link including a link to the approprite page, how do I do that?
