z-index not working

Zones: Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), Miscellaneous Web Development, Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)
Tags: css html
I have a flyout on my page that is getting covered by the right column ads. I tried using z-index:10000; but had no luck. I want to bring that div up to the front of the page so nothing sits on top of it.
