combo shifted to the right of div

I have a div containing an ajax combo, which consists of an input and an image on the right.

the div and input width all seems to be good, but the input field appears shifted to the right and cut off some of the image. at the same time, there is wasted space to the input field's left.

I checked border and padding, they do not appear to be the cause. can any one see what is the cause by looking at the gif?
