float property stretches parent div 100% across the page and I can't seem figure out why? can anyone please help?
ideally every "pictureView" div and image dimensions should be dynamic...

That's not because of the floats. Non-floated, non-absolutely-positioned, block-level elements expand to the full with of their parent by default.
The simplest thing to do would be to give "div.pictureView" float:left or float:right. If you want it centered, then it's more difficult to do because of IE6 and IE7's incomplete support for the display property.
