Question

PC display driver keeps failing

Asked by: williampeck

I have an HP Pavillion (Model a6750y, AMD 9650 Quad-Core 2.3 GHz, 8GM RAM, 64-bit, Vista)

I have two monitors:
- 24" HP (w2408h, rotates 90 degress)
- 19" Dell monitor (Generic PnP Monitor on ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics)

Frequently the monitors stop working and I get the blue screen of death, very ugly.

The error message is "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered"
- sometimes this flashes once and the system is ok
- other times this flashes on and off a couple times and then the BSOD

How can I troubleshoot this further ?

In posting this I realized (it looks like that) I don't have the actual driver for the Dell so maybe that is causing all the consternation.

Please check in Device Manager what the driver version is of your graphics card.  The latest one on HP's website is 8.540.0.0 and can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software10/COL26017/pv-66823-1/sp40853.exe if you are using the 32-bit version of Vista.

64-bit version can be downlaoded here ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software10/COL27136/pv-67624-1/sp40932.exe

If you are up-to-date - please come back for other possilities.

Thanks - Alan

If it is any consolation, my Asus M70Vn has the same problem on a regular basis, but I don't get the BSOD.

I downloaded and installed the 64-bit version you posted above. First installation had errors but then on 2nd install it seemed to go ok.

but then it still crashed :-(

Perhaps because I don't have the correct Dell driver, I will look into that. But I have to put on my reading glasses, turn the dumb thing upside down just to read the model # off the sticker . . .

I have the luxury of a twin HDD laptop so have Vista on one and Windows 7 on the other.

I spend most of my time on Windows 7 now and it is solid as.  Got the 64-bit version and I love it.  Sure is nice to see the back of the display driver problems.

Sure it is a workaround and not a fix, but I gave up trying to fix my Driver issues.

ok, good tips, thanks.

sorry for the delay. I was hoping it had gone away, but no luck. Now it's perhaps a tad bit longer interval before crashing, but it crashes nonetheless.

I would really like to get the proper driver for my Dell monitor, will try that.

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-09-30 at 09:02:36ID: 25460288

Are you on Windows 7 now?

I doubt that a monitor driver will do much, but should not harm it.

by: williampeckPosted on 2009-09-30 at 12:24:40ID: 25462375

no, too much going on to go to Windows 7 right now, will have to put this on hold and live with it.

I do have another Vista computer (bought at the same time as this one with issues), and it never has this problem. So it's something to do with the monitors I have.

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-09-30 at 13:14:37ID: 25462980

Are the two identical?

Are you using different monitors?

Can you move the monitor on the faulty PC to the PC without the faults and does the problem follow it?

Check the versions of drivers for graphics cards and monitors on both machines and mirror the one that is okay.

I'll close this out, you've answered the question. I will do the swap out to see if that makes the difference. Thanks.
