In other words, I want the courseID to be sent to the cfc as method argument.

1) use firefox+firebug to see what js errors are thrown, if any.
2) try using cf ajax debugger to see if it shows any errors thrown - enable ajax debugging in cf administrator and add ?cfdebug to the url of your page to show the debugger window
3) datasource="#this.dsn#" in your cfc function - in my experience, this.dsn does not work with remote (ajax) calls and bindings... try and change that to actual name of your dsn instead of a variable and see if it works

and this is what your bind expression should look like:
bind="cfc:components.cas.g
note the # around your cf variable. and if your courseID var was a string, you would also need to enclose it in single quotes.

just add it in the arguments you pass:
