The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

350 points: Table cell of width=1, just to draw a line (vertical/horizontal)

Asked by georgedb in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)

Tags: table

I wanted to make a nice separation between some sort of navigation part of the screen and the actual content. I never know exactly how long that line needs to be, so I can't use an image of a certain size.

I thought, why not insert a table cell with a width of just one pixel....

On my computer, this works great in IE 5 (I don't have IE4 and IE3 anymore, but, though the line might be missing, it needs to be readable in the old ones as well, as the targetgroup recently stopped using dumb terminals ;-)     ).

But in NN 4.7 the line is much fatter than 1 pixel, though I put cellspacing and cellpadding to 0. It's ugly! In NN 3, the lines are just not shown as the bgcolor within a <TD> wasn't supported by then (?)

But.... I just upload the page to a testsite for you to check and now even in IE5, there's the big fat line. Horizontal line uses the same idea and looks great in all, except NN 3, but the vertical line is fat.

The question of course is:

- how to get a beautiful thin 1 pixel line, both horizontaly and vertically

- maybe even in NN 3 with a different trick

- who can explain the difference between a page in IE 5 from disk or through the Web. There shpouldn't be ANY difference, it's exactly the same page!!!

Please answer the questions and where necessary, give a bit of an explanation. Maybe I build my tables totally wrong???

The URL where I put the stuff for examination is:
