The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

WordWrap in table field.

Asked by Workshop_Alex in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)

I have an application that generates a report as an HTML file. This file can then be put on a webserver, send by email or opened directly. I must stick to pure HTML 4, am allowed to use stylesheets but NO scripting, objects or dependencies to other files. It looks quite nice and is very useful but it just has one flaw... Here we go:

I have a table with quite a lot of rows and three columns. The width of this table is set to 100% but unfortunately the texts in the columns force the table to be wider than this. Thus the last column disappears from the screen and I need to scroll to the right to see it. When I print the report, part of it won't be printed.
The problem occurs because I am showing the following values:
Column 1: IMPORTTEMPLATE
Column 2: rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwiiiiiiiiiiiiiiikk,kkdddXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Column 3: <Default>

As you can see, the length of the value in colum 2 is very long. It makes the column quite wide. However, I want this column to be limited to a maximum width. Just setting the width of the field doesn't help. Adding <WBR> every x characters doesn't work either. And I can't add breaks dynamically since I'm not allowed to do any scripting in it. Besides, the page must be visible on 640x480 and also on 1600x1200 thus I can't set the width to any fixed value either. Neither am I allowed to add spaces or other visible characters in the value. Thus, it's a nice, simple problem for which I don't have an answer... yet.

With kind regards,
Alex.

p.s. Be aware that I have to follow the HTML 4 specifications very strictly. Style sheets are allowed, scripting, objects, applets and dependencies to other files isn't allowed. And it's a raw page without a web server behind it.
