Question

3D Content

Asked by: shofstetter

OK First off I have made a 3D haunted house for holloween in VRML.  It is not attacting very many visitors and is not as interactive as I wanted it to be.  I figure I have a whole year to make a new one for next year, but I don't want to use vrml to do it.  I have found that visitors to our website are just clicking <-Back instead of downloading the plugin to view the haunted house.  So I don't want to use plugin's, but if I have to I would like to use one that is used for more things than just displaying 3d content so that hopefully more visitors will already have it installed.
I have also found that while vrml is a fairly simple language it is getting old and it is hard to find good tools to edit it,  so I would like something with an easy to use tool.
and I think this is the last part I want it to be something that people accross many platforms will be able to view Linux/Windows/Mac/BSD
So My final Question is:
Is there any technology out there that I can learn to use in a  year that meets the above requirements and if so what is it and where can i get it.

also the url to the current haunted house is :
http://www.delta-control.com/house/

I would say flash is probably where you want to go.  The plugin is already in wide use.

Is flash fairly easy to learn and are there tools to aid in rapid development. If so could you give me the names of a few.

I don't do a lot of graphics stuff, so I don't know much about the tools.  You might be better have Community support move this to Web graphics topic or the flash topic.

The BASICS of Flash are fairly easy to learn. It's NOT a programming language as such, though it does have one for more advanced effects/features. It's a GRAPHICS program. If you're not familiar with drawing/graphics programs, you'll find it a little daunting at first -- but you'll find the programming part of it (which is what does all the hard work) pretty straightforward. It's based on javascript/ECMAscript, so the syntax is not unfamiliar if you've worked with that at all.

The best resource I've found is www.moock.org
There's also www.flashkit.com but I've found that the examples there can be WILDLY inconsistent. If you're lucky, you might find something useful.

moock.org is much better -- he's the guy who literally wrote the book for Actionscripting, and he knows Flash backwards, forwards and sideways. ;-)

I took a look at flash and doing 3d in flash.  From what I understand 3d inflash is more or less just for creatinf static animations  where what I am wanting to do is create a 3d world where users can freely move around in and interact with different parts of the scene.  Please correct me if I am wrong otherwise I am sill looking for something to enable me to do this.  I am looking for something that can do things like I have done in the current Haunted House (URL in first post) a little easier and more portable and up to date without the use of plugins or using common plugins or maybe even using a java applet.

Actually you've got the right company, just the wrong product. You would use Director for this, which uses a programming language called Lingo. As to whether you can pick this up in a year, I can't say. I haven't used it in about 4 years, but the learning curve was steep for the first couple of months, and then straightened off a bit. I would "HIGHLY" recommend a basic course - either in Director, or specifically with the 3D aspect after you're up to speed with the basics.

Anyone with shockwave should be able to view your content.

There's a lot of stuff out there, I can't think of a better place to start:

I don't want to have it viewed I want to have i experianced.  I want the user to decide exactly where to go and how to ge there.  I want the user to be able to walk around my worlds just like you would walk around in a 3d game.  I want to have other modles interact with the user.  I want the user to feel as if they were actually there in the world.  I can't think of it right now, but I can remember there being a java program with different applets that could display either vrml or run there scripts.  I can't remember the name of it though.  I took a look ath macromedia's director site I didn't see any examples that were interact like the haunted house I have made.  Maybe you have an interactive example I can take a look at to see if it is what I am looking for.

Walktrough?
Seriously - your suggestion is as good as any other here - it depends to a large degree on the user's skillset.
