Address Line Icons??

A Quick question,

I noticed a while back EE had its little orange "X" in the address bar as an Icon (before the address) I asked my usuall font of programming knowledge who said

its done by...........................

where images.favicon.ico is the location of the icon you want to use. I'm not sure if it has to be called favicon or not though. Probably does.

I tried it - and it didnt work, in fact on checking it wasnt working for any sites anymore, as Im always messing around with my seciurity settings Ive probably turned something off that needs to be ob, to enable it.

So Is the code above correct? and What could be disabling it on my browser (IE6)
