Is there any way to display an apostrophe using an entity that works across all browsers?

I am trying to use a Replace() fucntion to catch the apostrophe (which actually looks lieka right single quote).
Nothing is working.
I tried:
strInput = Replace(strInput,"’","'")
strInput = Replace(strInput,"'",
strInput = Replace(strInput,"´"
etc...
In Mozilla, it displays OK - but in IE I see an error:
The XML page cannot be displayed

I just use " that's supported by all browsers.
But you can also try ´ ′ or ’
