Display png correctly as background in IE

Using the technique detailed at http://alistapart.com/articles/onionskin/ , I've created a drop shadow for variable sized tables. Essentially it creates a drop shadow with a background picture. The table then limits what is displayed of the background graphic so it works with tables of various sizes. The technique creates some very realistic shadows when used with png files. Because IE 6 does not handle the alpha channel correctly, I've been using gif's for IE.

Recently I've been reading articles to correctly display png files in IE 4+. One of several such articles is http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/alpha.html .

That's the quick history of where the question comes from.

How can I correctly display png's when they're background of a table in IE?

If you know how to create drop shadows to various sized tables in pre-IE 7, that could also be accepted as an answer.
