Centering table contents vertically and horizontally within a td element

I know the short answer is, use CSS but I've been trying to get this to work for hours and have had no luck.

Anyway, if you follow this link:
http://findyourgeek.com/profile_new.php?id=277

...look to the upper left where you see "Send message", "Send wink", etc., etc.

That block needs to be centered in that box both vertically and horizontally based on the amount of space available to it which fluctuates as to whether the default picture is portrait or landscape.

I've tried every iteration of nesting, valigns, etc., etc. and can't get it to look right no matter what.

Eventually the entire site will be switched to CSS but for now we're stuck with tables.

Any ideas?

align="left" or center or right
valign="top" or middle or bottom

You need to make sure the cell is actually big enough for the content

I'm sorry, I should have explained myself better.  I definitely know about those properties my problem is that I've tried every kind of nesting and property setting iteration under the sun and I can't get it to vertical align in the center.

The code snippet below horiz centers but not vert.

Figured it out, you have to specify the height of the cell you want the items vertically aligned in.
