How to avoid extra spaces around <strong> and tags?

Asked by vallis in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Macromedia Dreamweaver, Extensible HTML (XHTML)

When including  <strong> and   and a number of other tags in my script I get extra spaces either side.

With anchor tags, <strong>, <em>, <tt> and others it can be fixed by removing the spaces between words but that's a nuisance.

With and it's worse. Even though there's no space between the tags and the adjacent letters, when viewed in the browser or in DW design view the spaces exist.

I've checked the source code on some other sites and it doesn't happen in the ones I checked.
