The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

What's the big deal about DOM?

Asked by gabrielPennyback in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

So what is the big deal? For example, if you go to this page at w3schools.com (http://www.w3schools.com/js/tryit.asp?filename=try_dom_tut_getelementbyid), ...

why would I want to use all that roundabout super technically precise coding, when I could produce the identical result much more simply and intuitively? Would anyone actually write the code for these 4 lines this way?

Furthermore they don't tell you the really interesting stuff, like how the "edit text and click me" button refreshes the images above it.

I suppose I'd be a better coder if I had this foundation, but it seems very daunting. I think I must be very slow and stupid, because I can't seem to learn anything from sites like this. They always tell me that I'll be writing ajax in minutes, and after a half an hour I still don't understand what's going on with this apparently simple piece of code., which I've attached below  For example, I'm used to having to define id's in css ... so where are "main," "main1," and "main2" defined?  Or are they standard terms that every browser knows what to do with? And why would I write <<< document.write("Intro paragraph text: " + x.innerHTML)>>>, when i can just write: "Intro paragraph text: W3Schools example"?

I'm in kind of a bind because I'm trying to learn this stuff as fast as I can for my job. And while in an ideal world  I would have learned all this basic foundational stuff before now, I didn't, and without someone to explain every third word I get stopped dead in my tracks.

Any and all help/comments/advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
