Question

How to move HTML tag "EMBED" into background

Asked by: DReade83

I have a PDF loading into an <embed> tag. I'm using a script to grey everything out and display a prompt box on top of the greyed out site. It's not a problem with the script, since several solutions do this and other users report a similar problem with the embed tag and PDFs.

Basically the embed tag with the PDF displays over the top of the greyed out website, and the pop-up, and is fully clickable (i.e. I can right click and choose the print option, etc), and can just about see the pop up sticking up behind the embed tag.

Surely there must be an easy way around this?

Add this to your tag:

wmode="transparent"

That'll fix it :)

I'm afraid not. IE doesn't have this issue, only Firefox. I've seen this happening on other sites too, it's like the EMBED tag has a z-index of 999 and sits on top of everything... So in my case if I have that pop-under box with the greyed out background, the background greys out and the pop-under appears, but the EMBED appears on top of both the pop-under and the background... Only in Firefox though. Any ideas?

I've been developing for many years and the wmode function has never let me down. Works fine in FF, which I know for sure as this is my main browser. Perhaps there is something else blocking it (like a z-index, which you already checked but perhaps something similar). Is the page online somewhere so I can take a look at the code when its live?

Unfortunately my site does not use a DOCTYPE - which means every browser renders the site in Quirks Mode. I know this is probably the worst thing I could have done - believe me I've had my moments where IE just doesn't work properly, and this is set to change very soon with a redesign, but could this be the cause?

Possibly. You could verify this by making a copy of the page having the embedded element to temp.html (or whatever extention you may use like asp/php/aspx etc) and add a doctype to this temp file. Open it in firefox and see what it does. It might screw up your layout as you haven't coded for that doctype, but you could see if the embedded object behaves as wanted..

Tried the doctype but the same issue occurs. The embedded PDF sits on top of everything, including the greyed out background.
