Best Ecommerce package to integrate with MY custom mysql products database?

Hi,

I have a lot of experience creating dynamic content-management php/mysql sites where the client updates their own content via back-end admin forms.  Have only done one ecommerce website however, and the client wanted to use Miva Merchant.  Though I'd already created a custom mysql table(s) of products for the front-end product browsing area of their website (that the client could maintain with back-end forms), we ended up having to DUPLICATE product data between my custom mysql table(s) and MIVA's web-based admin tool (and MIVA's database tables).

I have a new ecommerce website project and the opportunity to start fresh, and would prefer to make the products database tables myself again -- but is there an ecommerce solution that would create the shopping cart and checkout process from MY products table
(product_id, product_name, product_description, product_price, etc.)?

I'm asking a pretty general question really, I don't have a lot of experience with ecommerce and I don't even know if you have to give the ecommerce package ultimate products database control or whether there are any that can easily integrate with a custom mysql products table.

Is osCommerce capable of this?  Any others?  Or other general advice if I'm making any sense?  Does doing it this way make it more difficult, should I just relinquish control?
