Question

PHP SAFE MODE won't turn off...

Asked by: pitsbros

I can't seem to get PHP Safe Mode off on my server. PHPinfo.php shows that Locally it's turned off, but the Master still shows it as being ON. I made the change to php.ini and I've been told to look for httpd.conf to turn it off there, but there is no option to turn it off there either...any other suggestions?

Check any .htaccess files so see if it's been turned on there.

Where would the .htaccess files be located? Can I find them through ssh?

by: davepuseyPosted on 2007-03-03 at 09:47:54ID: 18647656

.htaccess files are located with your site's home directory.

by: davepuseyPosted on 2007-03-03 at 09:48:38ID: 18647660

find / -name .htaccess

...works on my linux box

by: davepuseyPosted on 2007-03-03 at 09:51:08ID: 18647666

From you phpinfo.php page you site is located in this directory...

/var/www/vhosts/pitstest.com/httpdocs

Try cd'ing to there and doing an "ls -a" and see if you have a file called .htaccess

by: pitsbrosPosted on 2007-03-03 at 09:56:39ID: 18647683

There are many, but  I see one in /usr/local/psa/admin/htdocs/domains/databases/phpmyadminn/libraries/.htaccess.

Could that be it?

by: davepuseyPosted on 2007-03-03 at 09:59:15ID: 18647690

no i doubt in. have you done...

cd /var/www/vhosts/pitstest.com/httpdocs
ls -a

by: pitsbrosPosted on 2007-03-03 at 10:00:30ID: 18647692

Yes, there isn't one there...

by: davepuseyPosted on 2007-03-03 at 10:02:47ID: 18647700

Well then I'm at a loss. I would have to ask on EE too now.

by: pitsbrosPosted on 2007-03-03 at 10:07:06ID: 18647719

There are a ton of .htaccess files, but do I need to go through all of them? This is kind of ridiculous, don't you agree?

by: davepuseyPosted on 2007-03-03 at 10:13:59ID: 18647742

I do, i would only expect .htaccess files from within the root dir of your site to do this. At least in my experience.

by: davepuseyPosted on 2007-03-05 at 15:17:52ID: 18658242

So was it in a .htaccess file then? I asume that is the case seeing as you have accepted my post and the answer.

by: pitsbrosPosted on 2007-03-05 at 16:29:58ID: 18658629

yep!

I had a similar problem. I turned off PHP Safe mode here: /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini but still my php scripts wouldn't work when trying to run a shell_exec command. It kept telling me shell_exec wouldn't run when safe mode was on. But then I turned off safe mode here: /etc/php5/cli/php.ini . Which "CLI" I believe stands for Command Line Interface. It's the command line version of php.ini. Once I turned Safe Mode here then shell_exec worked in my PHP script. I actually turned safe mode back to "On" in changed /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini and my PHP script using shell_exec still worked both on the command line and in the browser. So make sure you turn off safe mode there too.
