Using CURL instead of fwrite

My host recently implemented security enhancement on my server. As such, fopen and other parameters no longer work. I've heard that there is a way that you can use CURL to accomplish the same thing. Is this correct?

I previously used the following script to take some text and post it as a file. Can you tell me how this is done using CURL?
# $filename is the name of the file I want to save
# $filetext is the content I want to save.

$result = $fp = fopen($filename, "w");
if ($result != true) die ('Result is ['.$result.']');
$result = fwrite($fp, $filetext);
fclose($fp);
