I know that placing caps on how large a directory can grow to can be done but, I want to know if this can be done using php?

For example if I set a limit of 50 mbs on a specific directory, can I set up php to monitor the folder so that when the folder reaches this limit, it gives you an error?

And if so, anyone have any idea on how I would begin to code it?
