Should I using mysql_pconnect() with PHP 5.1.6 (cli)?

The link below says that there's only three ways to run PHP: (1) as a CGI "wrapper" (2) as a module in a multiprocess web server or (3) as a plug-in for a multithreaded web server. And I've read that using mysql_pconnect() may give me a performance boost only if I'm using PHP under case 2 or 3.

So how would I know if I'm running PHP as case 1, 2 or 3?

I'm guessing that case #1 looks like this:
shell>php my_php_script.php

I'm guessing that case #2 and #3 looks like this:
http://www.mydomain.com/my_php_script.php

The first method is to use PHP as a CGI "wrapper". When run this way, an instance of the PHP interpreter is created and destroyed for every page request (for a PHP page) to your web server. Because it is destroyed after every request, any resources that it acquires (such as a link to an SQL database server) are closed when it is destroyed.
