While developing a SAAS based Online (is there another kind?) enterprise solution using Zend/PHP with MySql as the database, our Db team suddenly wants to switch to Oracle. Their reasons are, resiliency and potentially huge Db size with large magnitude of enterprise level users, and a high transactions rate to be handled. Oracle perhaps is a choice in such scenarios, but especially with the Zend Core for Oracle, and Oracle 10g XE which is free, this appears even more tempting on the testing beta grounds we are operating on, and within the budget constrains of our start-up operations.
We need to take an informed dicision.... and fast. The dilemma is to know the level of re-work needed on PHP scripts, which is been worked upon for the past three months (close to 12 man-months of finished work). While the team partly argues that the Zend core would handle the transition, and liitle is needed to be done on the server scripts, very little can be gathered from web on the subject, and we have no access to the relevant experience.
