What is the best-practice way to use parameterized MSSQL queries in PHP?

Using:
PHP 5
windows Server 2003
Zend PHP

I can't tell what is the current practice.
I have been attempting to get PDO to work but can't find php_pdo_mssql.dll to download (it doesn't exist in extensions).
I installed some IBM_db2 solution which said it is for odbc, but i don't understand how to use it and can't find a tutorial.
Currently PDO returns a cannot find driver error for odbc, mssql

Does anybody have any advice on what I should focus on setting up, and can I see a string on how to connect to an external server and even do a query using it?
