I tried:
$query = $this->select();
$query->from(array('g' => 'games'), array('g.title', 'g.asin', 'g.platform_id'));
$query->join(array('r' => 'ranks'), 'g.id = r.game_id', array());
$query->order('r.rank DESC');
$query->limit(5); print_r($query->__toString(
$resultRows = $this->fetchAll($query);
return $resultRows;
And got the result below. Notice, r.rank is not part of the columns. That's the problem.
-----------
SELECT `g`.`title`, `g`.`asin`, `g`.`platform_id` FROM `games` AS `g` INNER JOIN `ranks` AS `r` ON g.id = r.game_id ORDER BY `r`.`rank` DESC LIMIT 5
------------------
But when I do
--------------------
$query = $this->select();
$query->from(array('g' => 'games'), array('g.title', 'g.asin', 'g.platform_id'));
$query->join(array('r' => 'ranks'), 'g.id = r.game_id', array('r.rank'));
$query->order('r.rank DESC');
$query->limit(5); print_r($query->__toString(
$resultRows = $this->fetchAll($query);
return $resultRows;
----------------------
I get the error
"Warning: Select query cannot join with another table in C:\phpLib\library\Zend\Db\

Maybe you should move the fields from first table in the from() :
$query = $this->select();
$query->from(array('g' => 'games'), array('g.title', 'g.asin', 'g.platform_id'));
$query->join(array('r' => 'ranks'), 'g.id = r.game_id', array('r.rank'));
$query->order('r.rank DESC');
$query->limit($top);
$resultRows = $this->fetchAll($query);
return $resultRows;
