The image file actually resides at: "/home/midni9/public_html/

On windows the path starts with a drive letter.
lic_html/i mages/gall ery/thumbN ails/testS m.jpg');
try something like
unlink('C:/home/midni9/pub
If it is not working then check if the script has permission to delete files.
