The echo statements together show "this is the size 6 noth";
This means that the datearray[0] is not printing since it is empty.
$i is printing because it was declared outside the while loop.
$datearray was declared and used INSIDE the while loop and I am sure it is falling out of scope as soon as the while loop ends.
(Inside the while loop $datearray prints its contents).
How can I declare an array outside the while loop so that it becomes accessible anywhere in the program.
Is there a way of declaring global arrays like in Java or C.

$array[i] in php is $array['i'] (quotes are recommended but not an obligation. the array is indexed in your case)
$datarray[i] contains at the end of the script the value of the LAST retrieved date
actually each loops affects this SAME element of $datarray
$datarray[0] is empty because nothing has ever been affected to it nor to any other element of the array.

$i=$i+1;

In the while loop you are doing this
$datearray[i]=$row['setnum
which actually should be like this
$datearray[$i]=$row['setnu
thats why when you try to access $datearray[0] its empty.

I am extremely sorry ThG. I really never read EE's description on grades. Where I studied, you had to be excellent to get a B and outright einsteinic to get an A. I was just following this habit I have - I guess. Is there any way I can change this grade to an A.

You are making some bad mistakes:
1. variables are NOT declared in PHP, you just use them (maybe you mean "initializated"
2. $datearray[i] outputs a warning (unless you disabled them), you are missing a "$" sign..
