PHP/MYSQL Cron Tab help on a Linux Free BSD server

Hello.

I am very VERY new to server side anythings.  I have a VPS account with interland where i host many different web sites.
I want to make an email script run automatically every day, so i heard i need to do something called a CRON JOB.

OK, so I:
created a test PHP script in one of the vhost directories called my_first_cron.php
SSHed into my server
typed crontab -e
got the open page and typed this to test my crontab prowess:
 
* * * * * ..usr/local/www/vhosts/corporaterx.com/htdocs/my_first_cron.php

Exited the program within SSH and it said "installing new crontab"
hopefully this would decrease a certain value in my MYSQL database by (1) every minute.
I waited and waited and nothing happened.

I know there is something drastically wrong with this, but there is a suprising lack of info on how to do crontabs on the internet.

I am using my mac unix terminal to SSH into the Linux Free BSD server where i have access to everything above and including the /usr/ directory.

(1) How well your script works
(2) How completely and easliy you explain why your script worked and mine did not (keeping in mind that I know nothing about this)
