using mkdir to create directory on server

I'm taking some form input and then after the POST, I create a directory with the following code:

//create server directory for screenshot
if (!empty($_POST['screenshotpath'])) {
      if(mkdir($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].$_POST['screenshotpath'])) {
       //directory creation was successful
            echo"success"; exit;
     } else {
            echo "Image Path Could Not Be Created! Please Check Server Settings."; exit;
      }
}

I understand that there is a problem with my Linux server settings, but I'm not quite sure what they could be or where to even look. My webapp was on a Linux server before and it worked fine so I can only assume that a local setting in my development environment is causing mkdir to fail in this instance.

Any ideas where to check or what to change?
